Festivals and Events

There are some Festivals and events I wouldn't mind attending and becoming part of over this year, this blogs is just really going to talk about them and why Id like to be involved in them.

The main festival I really want to go to this year is 'Tomorrow Land'. Its a HUGE festival in Belgium which over 180,000 people attend! If you watch the video below you will get kind of an idea as to why I want to go!..
The atmosphere looks incredible and it just seems like a once in a lifetime experience! If I couldn't actually get a ticket to go I would love to be able to be part of the crew who organise it or even be apart of making the 2013 after movie like this one!

We have been told this year by our tutors that we need to start entering more competitions and things like that and the only one at the moment that Im really interested in getting involved in is MoFilms. They have some cool comps with some awesome prizes up for grabs! Before I get too involved in any comps though Id like to get a group of people together to help out and also get this first module out of the way so I'm most likely to enter one of the competitions over Christmas when I have some free time.

Im sure other things will pop up as the year goes on but thats all I could think of at the moment but I will keep you guys posted if anything else pops up!

My improvements over the up and coming year...

Over the up and coming year of university there are a few things id much like to improve on, in this blog i'm going to say a couple of them and write why I think I need to improve.

The first major thing I need and want to improve on is my time management! Throughout college and last year of university my time management skills haven't been the best, I'm always finishing for a deadline the night before and just forgetting things. I could blame this on my Dyslexia but that would mostly just be an excuse as I am quiet lazy! Already though this year I have started keep track of things by putting them into my calendar on my phone and even with these blogs I have started writing titles to blog posts I need to do and just saving them as drafts so I know I will defiantly do them.

Having a job while being at University doesn't exactly help either though to be honest but I have to make a living as I can't afford to just live of my student loan and have little help from my parents but thats not there fault. I am trying my hardest though to manage the two so they are balanced just sometimes it gets harder than other times.

Something else I would like to improve on would probably be keeping up to date on the latest cameras, gear and software out there as I feel like sometimes when people are talking about certain things, i'm just nodding my head for the sake of it but actually have no idea what they are talking about! I know the library has good recourses like magazines with this info in them so I will have to venture down there to see what I can find.

The only other thing I can really think of improving this year is probably my confidence and networking which I feel links into confidence. My confidence has got a lot better since last year and I think this is mainly from getting my job at the skatepark because Im constantly talking to customers on the desk and on the phone but also because this year I am living with Thomas Bone, Siobhan Parkhouse, Lija Jursin and Rhys Bryant who are from the course I am studying and I get along with well so I think its helping me to become more comfortable, especially in our course group at uni as last year I just seemed to sit in the corner and not really talk to anyone!

Overall though I think I can improve on these things over the up and coming years and I look forward to reflecting on them next year to see if they have actually improved!

How to get in and succeed in the Film industry...

How to Get in and Succeed in the Film Industry

Many of todays highschool media programs are providing students with digital cameras and creative software for editing video, but to make your living in film you need much more knowledge of the film and video production process.
The film industry today demands workers who have received practical training not only on professional film and video equipment but also training in how a production goes together and how all 23 jobs behind the camera relate to one another. The film industry is a time and money business like no other. There is little time to train you on the job. You must know your craft and be responsible to succeed in film.
  • THEATRE
  • - Good grounding for actors but has very limited job potential for actors or technicians.
  • TELEVISION
  • - Good for learning TV Journalism, simple camera work, and interview techinques, but a small market for jobs.
  • FILM -
  •  This is where the jobs are. Last years British Columbia generated over 1.1 billion dollars in revenue from the motion picture production industry.
I deal with such topics as: Union, Guilds, non union work, pay scales, skills need to work in theatre, televison and film, as well as jobs above and below the line along with non theatrical film work.
There are no eight hour days in the film world. Your average day is twelve hours and it is not uncommon to work a longer day.

Workers in our industry often refer to their jobs as a "lifestyle" not a job. Though the hours are long and the work often challenging, it is a creative business that pays its skilled workers well.
Lets look at a few facts:
On the west coast alone more than 35,000 individuals make their living from the film industry. The majority of this work is servicing American Films that are being shot in Canada. More than 90% of the crew working on these films are Canadian. A feature theatrical film can employ more than 100 crew members.
The 1,000 channel universe is here, and the demand for product for television broadcasting will be ever increasing. Todays graduates are the filmmakers and actors that will supply this need.
My seminar on How to get in and Succeed in the Film Industrywill give your students the hard facts and practical information they need to know to succeed in film. I familiarize them with the various film schools and training facilities available and the opportunities that await them as they become employable in the industry.
Whether you want to become a director (and most students do) or a camera operator, or a set decorator, your work in the film business is not a job, it is a lifestyle. It can be a lifestyle that is very rewarding both creatively and financially, but it comes through hard work.
Canada’s film industry is a big business run by skilled professionals. On the west coast alone there are some 50,000 people that work in film. A majority of this work is servicing the American Film Production Industry. Greater than 90% of the technicians working on these films are Canadian.
There are over 23 different key departments on a film crew and the overall crew on a big film will number more than a hundred. As part of my seminars I acquaint students with the theatrical and non-theatrical (educational, commercial and corporate video) parts of our business, as well as the opportunities available in the acting profession.

I read the above passage from the website speakfilm.com. Its a guy called Barry Casson has written it because he does seminars on 'How to get in and succeed in the Film industry', the passage is just brief explanation about the film industry and different industries like Theatre and Television. Iv found it very interesting to read and it has given me a better insight in to what to expect and how to act if I want to pursue my ambition to get more involved in the film industry! The statistics he shows are mind blowing, I never knew that over 35,000 people make their living in the film industry, I thought it was a lot less than that! Kind of scary but interesting.
By the sound of it I really need to get my act together sooner rather than later if I want to get in to this kind of industry!

My Vlog

I also started my own video blogging (vlog) channel on Youtube which was nerve-racking and challenging but fun to make, you can watch any of them videos by clicking here

One of the videos I made in particular 'The Chubby Bunny Challenge'

sent something my way that I was not expecting from it at all! A guy called Chris from CBS in America contacted me via youtube asking if he could use the video in a popular TV show over there called The Doctors.

I jumped at the opportunity and after weeks of waiting I finally saw it on there website for the doctors, click here to watch it!

I still can't believe that one of my videos got used on an American TV show that over 3 million people tune in to watch! Over all one of the best stupid videos iv ever made and i'm so proud of if. We did come across a few issues with it while Chris was trying to incorporate it in to the show because of the soundtrack that I used because they couldn't get the copyright for it and I deleted my RAW footage! Thankfully though it still got used but Iv learnt my lesson to keep all footage just incase anything like this happens again!

I am still in touch with Chris and the last time i spoke to him he told me he would keep checking up on my vlog to see fi there is anything else they could use so I am defiantly going to keep on making my vlogs in my spare time.

Summer Antics...

Over summer I have mainly just been working at The Works Skatepark  as general staff but also filming any events and comps or just general videos that I got asked to do but either my manager or any customers using the facilities. You can watch any of those videos by clicking here.

In this blog post I will be reflecting on my favourite videos I have made over the summer, the challenges and enjoyment I got out of making them.

So first off making the videos for The Works, my part time job. Iv made a few videos over the summer for the skatepark but i'm just going to talk about 2 of my main favourite videos iv made. The first one being 'The Works | Barney Stonelake', this video took almost all summer to complete as Barney a friend from work and a team rider for The Works wanted a really good video making not just one that took one session riding as he wanted to send it to a few BMX companies to attempt  to get sponsored. I Filmed it with my own camcorder a Sony Handycam and edited it on Final Cut Pro X. Once the edit was finished and uploaded to MPORA (an extreme sports video site) it almost went viral getting over 1,000 views in less than a night. I really enjoyed filming and editing it but the only thing I would change would be having it all more planned out in what days we were filming and how long for etc.

The other video from work I really enjoyed filming was actually filmed just at the end of the summer when I loaned a XD Cam out from uni for a week. 'The Works | Alex Shepherd' is my favourite video iv made in a long while mainly because it was filmed with a Sony EX1 XD Cam which are fantastic camera and I wish I actually owned one! This video was filmed in a single session one evening at work while it was a quiet night, it features Alex Shepherd who is also a team rider for The Works Skatepark. I enjoyed filming this video because we had a good laugh doing it, everything went smoothly and a lot of people have given me good feedback about it, the only thing I would improve is the editing and colour correction as I feel its about purple or red in some clips, the lighting in the skatepark isn't that great though which didn't really help! Overall I am pleased with both of these videos.
